ABOUT

Yuki Iwama is an QTPOC Korean-Japanese writer and director based in Christchurch, New Zealand. They earned a Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) with Distinction at RMIT University in 2017.

Their short stories and experimental nonfiction have appeared in zines and journals, including Literati Magazine, Lor Journal, Needle in the Hay, Girls Will Be Girls, Bonfire Park, and Voiceworks. They have also been published in two anthologies, Others (2015) and Burn, Thrive, Burn (2016). Their short horror fiction, I don’t know what it is but it keeps screaming, was dramatised on the popular NoSleep Podcast.

Yuki's experiences in theatre include writing and directing plays that have been performed at the La Mama Theatre (2016), Mudfest (2015), and Melbourne Fringe Festival (2015, 2016, & 2017). They were a participant in the Australian Theatre for Young People’s National Studio in 2015. There they were mentored by playwright Lachlan Philpott.

Yuki has worked as a Creative Director for RMIT’s 2016 production of Snatches as part of Melbourne Fringe Festival. They have also spoken at the National Young Writers’ Festival and Melbourne Emerging Writers' Festival. 

Among their directing credits are two of their short plays, Canyon and A Static House, which was performed for the 2017 Melbourne Fringe Festival as part of Snatches. They debuted their short play, TILT, to London audiences as part of the earth. project curated by Jules Orcullo at the Lyric Hammersmith. 

 

Yuki is currently working on a musical feminist-retelling of Echo & Narcissus and their first full-length play.
